About
Mi Casita Mexican Home Décor was born out of my passion for Mexico’s unique artesanía, discovered during numerous vacations to my heritage country. As I ventured deeper into Mexico, I encountered increasingly sophisticated and unique forms of functional art that now fill our home, bringing great joy to me, our family, and friends.
My journeys taught me that there is a specialization of arts and crafts throughout Mexico depending on the community. For example, “barro negro” or black pottery comes from San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca, Otomi embroidery originates from Tenango de Doria, Hidalgo, and variations of Talavera come from Puebla.
My travels also reminded me that Spanish is not the only language in Mexico; there are approximately 69 indigenous languages and 68 indigenous groups. Many of these groups are integral to the community of artesanos, who use raw local resources and materials to create
beautiful, traditional, and exclusive home décor that we all value and appreciate.
Traveling through Mexico allowed me to meet amazing artesanos and their families, who are an essential part of the artesanía production, no matter the location. While researching Mexico’s artistic creations, I find myself in city and country markets, artisan events, and remote communities.
The artesanos share stories about their successes, challenges, and how their artistic talents and skills are passed down through generations. They are devoted artisans whose works are inseparable from their daily lives.
However, there are also stories about the new generations pursuing other careers and changes in societal values, which will impact the preservation of their traditional crafts. The artesanos are appreciative and often surprised that so many visitors from outside of Mexico are interested in purchasing their works and learning about the origins of their craft. Connecting with the artesanos is an honor and a fulfilling experience!
When you visit Mi Casita in the Village of Corrales, you will find a curated collection of high-quality, handmade pieces, each unique and often taking weeks or even months to craft. Many of the artistic installations at Mi Casita include the name of the artesano and the location where they are made, allowing customers to learn about the creators behind these exceptional functional art pieces.
