In Mexico, paper mache, or cartonería, has deep cultural and artistic significance, especially in the creation of celebratory and ritualistic items. It was introduced to Mexico by Spanish missionaries in the 16th century, who used it to craft religious objects and figures. Over time, Mexican artisans transformed the craft into a unique art form, creating figures that reflect Mexican culture, traditions, and folklore. Calaveras and Catrinas: During Day of the Dead celebrations, paper mache skulls (calaveras) and skeleton figures (catrinas) are common. The catrina, created by José Guadalupe Posada, is an iconic representation of a wealthy, skeletal woman and serves as a satirical reminder of mortality, often humorously portraying the dead in fancy attire.
