Artisan Profile – Gonzales Peña
Family: Gonzales Peña
Region: Michoacan, Mexico
Technique: Burnished Clay/Barro Bruñido
A pottery workshop from Michoacán, with a tradition dating back to 1815, crafts each piece by hand using ancestral techniques that have been refined over generations. Their goal is to provide high-quality items that embody Mexican culture and tradition. They offer distinctive artisanal pottery known for its high resistance, thanks to the use of high-temperature ceramic-grade clay. Their pottery is dishwasher and oven safe, naturally sealed to prevent moisture and fungus growth, and does not transmit odors or flavors.
This pottery is made from an alloy of three types of clay with minimal sand content and is fired at 1,050 degrees Celsius, enhancing its durability and strength. It comes in natural, black, and mottled tones, all achieved through oven techniques without glazing.
