Family: Orovio
Region: Michoacan
Technique: Reed Weaving/Artesania de Chuspata

Chuspata is a type of reed native to the lakes and wetlands of Michoacán, Mexico, that artisans use to create handcrafted items. Mr. Orovio, a skilled 27-year-old craftsman who learned the trade from his grandfather and father, created the pieces for Mi Casita. The process begins with harvesting the chuspata from the local lake, followed by drying it for four days. The reed is then wetted to make it pliable before being woven into a variety of products, including baskets, furniture, rugs, and decorative pieces. Its natural flexibility and strength make it ideal for weaving, enabling the creation of both functional and decorative items. The entire process can take up to two weeks to complete.
