In the 1980’s many men from the village of Tzinzuntzan migrated to the United States and women formed a cooperative to learn embroidery skills to support their families. The embroidery craft is made by Purépecha women, it is a stunning expression of their cultural heritage and artistic skill. Rooted in the traditions of the Purépecha community in Michoacán, this embroidery is known for its intricate designs, vibrant colors, and symbolic patterns. Each piece tells a story, often inspired by nature, daily life, and ancestral motifs. Purépecha women create textiles and garments that are both functional and decorative. Their work reflects a deep connection to their identity and the land, making each embroidered piece a meaningful representation of their rich cultural legacy. The embroidered pieces tell stories of the people e.g. everyday life, cultural celebrations, and weddings.
